چکیده

Basic IC fabrication techniques are employed in this paper with the purpose of designing a microfluidic device with a 3D electrode arrangement to separate live and dead biological cells. This is done using the concept of dielectrophoresis, which describes the transnational motion of particles due to the application of a non-uniform electrical field. The simulations where carried out using the protoplast model for mammalian spherical cells [4] in a wide range of electric field frequencies. Analytically, we have found that the Clausius-Mossoti Factor is negligible for live mammalian cells over a frequency range of 50 – 70 KHz whereas is maximum for the dead cells. Since the Clausius-Mossoti factor is the important term in the dielectrophoretic force formulae, we can envision our microfluidic design as a feasible tool to separate live and dead mammalian cells.

Field-induced Dielectrophoresis and Phase Separation for Manipulating Particles in Microfluidics

We report observations of a new electric fieldand shear-induced many-body phenomenon in the behavior of suspensions. Its origin is dielectrophoresis accompanied by the field-induced phase separation. As a result, a suspension undergoes a field-driven phase separation leading to the formation of a distinct boundary between regions enriched with and depleted of particles. The theoretical predicti...

Dielectrophoretic effect of nonuniform electric fields on the protoplast cell

In recent years, dielectrophoresis based microfluidics systems have been used to manipulate colloids, inert particles, and biological microparticles, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, cancer cells, bacteria, yeast, micro‌organisms, proteins, DNA, etc. In the current study the governing electric potential equations have been solved in the presence of cell for the purpose of ...

Discrimination methodology of living-cells and microbeads using dielectrophoresis and fluid-induced shear force

Cell sorting is an important technology that is widely used for medical diagnosis in hospitals and cell engineering research. Among cell sorting technology, dielectrophoresis (DEP) is one of the most promising approaches for manipulating and separating biological particles because this phenomena requires no labeling procedure with a fluorescent dye or magnetic beads. In this study, we developed...

Guest Editorial - A Milestone Toward Clinical Laboratory Automation Based On Dielectrophoresis

The dielectrophoresis (DEP) is suitable for handling micro-/nano-particles or tubes, sometimes together with gravity and/or flow of liquids. Recently research works on applications of DEP to biochemical measurement of biological cells alive or dead. Mass-processing of clinical laboratory test will be led to Clinical Laboratory Automation. We made discussions about what should be considered for ...

Rapid cell separation with minimal manipulation for autologous cell therapies

The ability to isolate specific, viable cell populations from mixed ensembles with minimal manipulation and within intra-operative time would provide significant advantages for autologous, cell-based therapies in regenerative medicine. Current cell-enrichment technologies are either slow, lack specificity and/or require labelling. Thus a rapid, label-free separation technology that does not aff...
